7 Clean Eating Tips to Lose Weight, Feel Great and Reset Hormones without Stress, Frustration or Overwhelm
Two of the top questions I get when it comes to clean eating are “what is clean eating” and “how to eat clean for beginners.”
For busy women entrepreneurs who are juggling life, family, business, weight loss and hormonal imbalance symptoms, these 7 clean eating tips will kickstart a simple, no-hassle lifestyle with better habits and a powerful mindset.
So, what is clean eating? Simply put, clean eating is choosing real food over processed food whenever you can.
No complicated rules or gimmicks. Clean eating empowers you to nourish your strong, beautiful, and powerful body with whole, non-processed foods that give you back your energy and glow your skin from the inside out.
If you’ve been on the diet roller coaster for a while or you’re just looking to create and cultivate healthier habits for a naturally healthy weight and lifestyle, then figuring out how to eat clean for beginners is easy – Eat REAL food in its most natural state (as much as you can afford to).
Here are 7 Clean Eating Tips to help you eat real food in its most natural state and support you to lose weight for good, feel great and reset fluctuating hormones.
Clean Eating Tip 1: Add MORE Water
Water can be a healthy alternative to other soft drink, juices and beverages that contain processed sugar. Stay well hydrated to lose weight naturally.
Drink up, beautiful women!
Yes, I know it’s not a nourishing meal, but I guarantee this clean eating tip is the best nourishment on this list. Staying hydrated every day, especially before you hit the caffeine in the morning is the easiest way to stay healthy with glowing, smoother skin and a flatter, happier belly.
Water reduces cravings, balances hormones, reduces inflammation, balances blood sugar, flushes out toxins, and slows down signs of aging.
Yes, it does all of the things the pills, lotions and diets promise too.
Experts say that it’s best to drink half your body weight in ounces every day. If you’re not a ‘water person, consider starting with 1 or 2 cups of warm water (with lemon slices or grated ginger) in the morning, and then slowly working your way to at least 6 more cups throughout the day.
Adding lemon slices, grated ginger or any of the other garnishes listed below will boost the taste and give you a great tool for ditching belly bloat, painful gas, indigestion, nausea, and other unwanted conditions. A few natural, simple, and clean flavors you can add include:
Fresh lemon juice
Fresh lemon slices
Fresh ginger slices
Fresh mint leaves
Fresh cucumber slices
Fresh slices of pineapple
Fresh basil or cilantro
Consider water your new pick me up! Enjoy!
Bonus Water and Clean Eating Tips to Beat the Bloat
In the morning, consider drinking a lemon elixir with 2 cups warm or room temperature water, Juice from 1 lemon, 1 Tablespoon Bragg’s raw apple cider vinegar and a Pinch of cinnamon or 1 teaspoon raw honey.
This lemon elixir stimulates digestion, releases toxins from the liver, and jumpstarts your digestive enzymes.
And this Alkalizing chlorophyll drink is great in the evenings. Mix 1 Tablespoon chlorophyll in 12 ounces of water and add Juice from 1 lemon.
Chlorophyll is an amazing cleanser, blood nourisher, detoxifier, and a healing superfood. Chlorophyll builds red blood cells, removes heavy metals from the body, eliminates bad breath, and improves digestion. It is also a prebiotic that creates the space for good bacteria to thrive. Amazing right? You can find it in kale, spinach, or parsley.
Tip 2: Add MORE Nutrient Dense Foods
When you choose to eat clean, you’re focusing on eating nutrient dense whole foods or minimally processed foods that are made from REAL ingredients. This means that you’re eating foods closer to their original source, with little to no manipulation between the source of the food and your plate.
Nutrient dense foods have a ton of nutrients, taste delicious and are relatively low in calories compared to lower nutrient options like fast food. They include eggs, broccoli, wild-caught salmon, avocado, and sweet potatoes.
Clean Eating Tip 3: Add MORE Fruits, Vegetables and Dark Leafy Greens
How much fruit and veggies per day? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) only 1 in 10 adults meet the federal fruit or vegetable recommendations. Are you the 1 in 10 eating your recommended number of fruits, veggies and leafy greens?
The CDC notes that “[d]epending on their age and sex[,] federal guidelines recommend that adults eat at least 1½ to 2 cups per day of fruit and 2 to 3 cups per day of vegetables as part of a healthy eating pattern.”
Not only will you increase your chances for maintaining a naturally healthy weight, but adding more fruits, vegetables and leafy greens also lowers the risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
One of my favorite parts about adding more fruits, veggies and dark leafy greens is the added fiber. Whether it’s in your favorite smoothie, celery juice or your go-to Kale salad, or just anytime, the fiber in whole produce gives you a happy gut and improves your mood.
There are several benefits to adding more greens to your diet. I know many women entrepreneurs who love their green juice and are always on the hunt for the best green juice recipe.
If juicing is your thing, then lets look at some of the benefits of celery juice. I’m more a celery smoothie fan because I love my fiber, but just adding fresh celery to your diet gives you calcium, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin c, potassium, and other essential daily minerals and vitamins. One benefit of celery juice, or in my case, celery and kale smoothies was the difference they made with my dry scalp. My hair texture, scalp and growth improved significantly.
Aim for at least 5 servings of fruits, veggies, and dark leafy greens every day with your clean eating lifestyle. Incorporating this into your clean eating meal plans will support you to be healthier.
Tip 4: Shift Mindset from Calories to Nourishing Ingredients
One of the things that sabotages women entrepreneurs when creating a clean eating lifestyle is the focus on calories. After spending years and tons of time, money and energy on diets that don’t work, it is easy to see how you would spend time counting every calorie you eat.
But this scarcity mindset is a huge self-sabotaging block that derails a healthy lifestyle and robs you of your joy.
This clean eating tip creates a mindset shift to focus on ingredients, and is crucial for losing weight for good or maintaining a naturally healthy weight. Nourishing ingredients support your amazing body to do what it wants the most; to love you.
Think quality over quantity. Avocados and walnuts are high in calories, but they are also very nutrient dense and loaded with healthy fats and fiber that keep you full longer and curb cravings that cause stubborn weight gain.
Think about it. 180 calories of Avocado is not the same as 180 calories from a Big Mac Cheeseburger.
Tip 5: Reduce or Cut out Refined or Added Sugar
This one’s personal. I’ve seen so many women entrepreneurs slowly kill themselves (myself included) with refined or added sugar. I’m the first to admit that I’m a recovering sugar addict. You can read my sugar story here or here.
Eating more than the recommended amount of sugar is linked to multiple health issues from obesity to diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay, chronic fatigue, poor sleep habits and hormonal imbalance. And excess sugar rapidly ages you; yes, it ages you faster than the crow’s feet visible on your face. I know because I’ve seen it over and over again and it happened to me too.
When creating a healthier lifestyle for me and my family, we swapped out sugar-heavy desserts for healthier treats like whole plain yogurt topped with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, and a dash of cinnamon. It’s more filling and satisfies most cravings longer.
I won’t get into the baffling idea that sugar laden cereals (allegedly whole grain) are the perfect breakfast options for us. Is it any wonder that many women entrepreneurs suffer from the common 3pm sugar craving habit or barely have enough energy to get through the day? I’m not passing judgment. I ate sugar cereals and had a very consistent 3pm dunkin donuts habit for over 20 years.
Thanks to these poor habits, I’ve struggled with 28 excess pounds, lived through at least 8 root canals, 7 tooth extractions, oral surgeries and prediabetes. I’ve eaten a bag of gummy bears and a bar of Kit Kat 45 minutes after a root canal. I couldn’t even wait until the numbness was over. I really, really needed my sugar. Giving in to my sugar cravings also aged me by at least 15 years. Reversing the physical, emotional, and psychological damages changed my life.

Tip 6: Read Nutrition Labels Carefully
Food labels are incredibly misleading. Manufacturers are masters of disguise. Let’s say, you’re cutting back on processed sugar, and you pick up a can that says low sugar or no sugar. It is easy to identify the word sugar on a nutritional label, but what happens when the manufacturers use other types of sugar in the product? Recognizing sugar in disguise is difficult if you don’t know the other disguised names. Lucky for you, you’ll find them on this blog.
Reading nutrition labels carefully is one of the keys to creating happy hormones. We kickstart happy hormones with what we put in our mouths. Know your body and read your food labels especially if you are buying processed foods. A jar could be labeled low sugar or low fat, and you may not realize that 80% of the other ingredients contain high sodium, added sugar, preservatives or artificial additives that cause chronic inflammation.
Clean eating is not about eliminating all processed foods; it is more about making the best choice for healthier ingredients that supports a healthier lifestyle. If you’re considering clean eating foods, I invite you to read labels and boost your chances of choosing processed foods with healthy ingredients.
Clean Eating Tip 7: Add MORE Protein
Finally, adding more protein is one of the best ways to create a nourishing clean eating lifestyle. Protein sources like fish, eggs, nuts and beans and hummus fill you up faster, curb cravings and keep you satisfied longer than snacking on potato chips.
Clean eating is not a diet. It’s a lifestyle that helps you be healthier, look and feel great naked, enjoy more energy, clarity and focus, and younger, youthful glowing, radiant skin, hair and nails.
If weight loss is a goal, it’s a great option for losing weight safely and sustainably.
Small hinges swing big doors. Start with one clean eating tip at a time, and enjoy more nourishing, nutritious, and delicious meals again.
There are probably 100 tips or more for clean eating, but these 7 are a great start for any busy woman entrepreneur.
